A practical checklist before combining or extracting PDF pages

By Team Hypomnema · Updated October 18, 2026

Plan page order, choose ranges, protect originals, and check the result of a browser-based PDF workflow before sharing it.

Choose the operation that matches your goal

Merging joins the pages from several PDFs into one new document. Splitting, as implemented here, extracts the pages you specify into a separate PDF. Neither operation is the same as editing the words on a page. If you want an editable text document, PDF to Word may be more appropriate; if you want to create pages from photographs, use Image to PDF.

Before starting, decide what the recipient needs. A combined report may require a cover sheet first, followed by the main document and appendices. A selected-page copy might need only a receipt or an excerpt. Planning that order reduces the chance of producing a technically valid file that is missing important context.

Keep originals and arrange the inputs

Save an unmodified original of every source file. In Merge PDF, add the documents and use the up/down controls to arrange them. Whole files are copied in that order; the pages inside each input keep their original sequence. Check similar filenames carefully so that a draft does not accidentally replace the final version.

For Split PDF, page numbers refer to the positions in the file, starting at one. A printed page label can be different: a cover might be position one even if the visible numbering starts on the next page. Use the PDF viewer to check the positions before entering your range.

Use ranges deliberately

A range such as 1-3, 5 extracts the first three pages and then the fifth. Our tool preserves the order in which you first request each page, and includes a repeated page only once. For example, 4, 1-2 creates a three-page result with page four first. Descending or out-of-bounds ranges are rejected so that you can correct them before downloading.

This splitting tool produces one selected-page PDF. It does not automatically make a separate file for every page or every range. If you need several separate excerpts, create and download each result in turn, keeping track of which ranges you used.

Work within the browser’s limits

The current limits are 30 files, 30 MB per file, 80 MB combined, and 1,000 pages per PDF result. Your device may reach its memory limit earlier. On a phone, smaller batches are often more practical. A damaged or password-protected input must be replaced with a valid, unlocked copy.

After downloading, open the new PDF and inspect page count, order, orientation, and legibility. Rewriting may not preserve document-level forms, bookmarks, attachments, accessibility tags, or digital signatures. If those features are important, use a workflow that explicitly supports them and keep the original document as your reference.
